O'Din is a poet of redemption and reluctant rebirth. Take "The Waxing Dargle" Many Moons have changed/ These tides within me/ Where waves of nausea/ Once washed over me/ Several times daily/ Leaving in their wake/ The broken shells/ Of dead things/ That scraped me/ (Clean?)/ There are now strands/ Of seaweed/ Great and flowing/ Pieces of glass/ And stones made smooth/ By the ceaseless rhythm/ And pounding/ Of the Sea// Something has opened in me/ I may not know what to do/ With my Freedom/ Beautiful and Terrifying/ But I am learning.

His voice takes on elements of the mystic wise and wry and longing for connection with the source. However, when he shines a light on longing, is when his work verges on the sublime The Cattails and the Queen Anne's Lace/ Wave from the roadside washes/ And this Highway is Holy/ Save for the distance it puts between us.

I think Matias O'Din is a great American poet.
